How to get what you want
Yesterday, I was in Bauchi state capital to resuscitate our business transaction with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital. The rocky town has indeed transformed- a transformation dividend of democracy in the most populace black nation. My company used to do big businesses there but somehow we lost our foothold. I had a wonderful time while reviving this prospect. I met some wonderful fellas that run things there.
While waiting for the Chief Medical Director, one of the junior staff in his office asked his colleague: "How do one get what he wants?" and the question got my attention.
We all want things in life - be it a good job, a great relationship, financial stability. Instead of allowing them to remain desires, we need to learn get what we want.
If you’re not contented with your lot, you must know what it is you’re lacking in your life? Take time to identify what it is you want. Always think about where you’d like to see yourself in the future, what you want for your life. Dream big!
After you’ve decided what it is you want. Make a plan of how you’re going to get there. Be strategic in your planning, lay out your overall plan in small doable steps. If your overall aim is to become your own boss – you must know how you plan on getting there? Step one could be researching the industry you’re planning on entering into, or talking to mentors who have been where you want to be.
The first step is always the most difficult, but once you start, the hardest part is done. If reaching your goal means getting other people on board, get the right people. If someone has something that you think will help you get what you want, then ask them for help. Most people love to be useful, love to be wanted and love to help.
There will be obstacles, that’s life. Expect them and don’t be deterred by them. Be prepared to get around them, jump over them, get through them – I mean do whatever it takes.
Keep your eyes open to new avenues, new contacts, new ways of getting to where you want to go. Try not to be so focused on your goal that you forget to lift your head up to spot opportunity when it arises. Your goal could be a lot closer than you think…
There’s bound to be time involved in getting what you want and, so, patience is of essence. Keep your goal in mind, keep a progress diary close, update it regularly and enjoy the journey.
Don't give up.
